Brain Awareness

Welcome to Brain Awareness, 2024!

Every year, enthusiastic volunteers from the Society for Neuroscience, Ottawa Chapter, tour local schools to introduce students to the wonders and mysteries of the brain. Over the course of the pandemic, we shifted to virtual presentations and were able to reach 1,000 students in 2021 and 2022. In 2023, we were so excited to show off our new and updated presentations in-person for the first time in 3 years! Our 2023 Brain Awareness initiatives reached over 1,600 kids in the Ottawa community. Our eager volunteers loved engaging young minds, teaching brain facts and giving fun demonstrations. With our events spanning 2-weeks, we had something for all ages, including parents! Read more about what we accomplished in 2023 here.

New & Updated Presentations!

This year we introduce new content and presentations! Our volunteers are currently hard at work creating presentations that all students will find interesting and inspiring. Students will have the chance to learn tricks that can improve their memory, what social media does to the brain, and how to cope with stress. Descriptions of available presentations can be found here.

Brain Awareness at the Museum

Each year, the Canadian Museum of Science and Technology sees over 5000 visitors during March Break. SfN Ottawa and Carleton Neuroscience are delighted to be partnering with the museum during this time for part of our Brain Awareness Week outreach. This year, March 13 to 15, from 11am to 3pm, we will be doing interactive Backyard Brain demos, including the robotic claw, human-to-human interface, mini-EEG, and reaction time tests. Join us for this exciting event, teaching kids about the wonders of the brain!
